Groceries in Dubrovnik--Don't Be Afraid to Cook!

Kozum Grocery stores and a few helpful food words
Throughout the old city you'll find kozum grocery shops of various sizes.  One near the Ploce gate is small but has meat, fresh breads, dairy products, beverages, coffee, tea, snacks--just about anything you need.  I got fresh arugala, lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes for a salad and the quality of the produce was good.

If you have a car or can get to nearby Lapad on the bus, they have a relatively large Tommy "supermarket" near their walking area.  ("Supermarket" seems to be their word for a grocery store, no matter the size.)  This year I bought nice chicken fillets, fresh pasta, and a type of chicken lunch meat, all of which were good. What's interesting is that there is very little difference between the prices at this larger store out of the heavy tourist area and the small Kozums in the heart of the city.  But the larger store has much more variety.  In 2007, I found splenda at this store in Lapad (which may have been operated by Kozum at that time), but they have not had it in 2009 or 2010.

Forget about trying to find Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew, but you'll have no trouble finding Coke or Pepsi, even Coke Zero, which is offered in most restaurants. However, you might find it challenging to identify some of the other foods with Croatian labels. Here are a few things we discovered when we've had kitchenettes in our rooms: sour cream is kiselo vrhnje, butter is maslac, milk is mlijeko, cottage cheese is sir svjezi, cream is vrhnje, chicken filet is piletina, turkey is pura, flour is prah/brasno, sugar is secer and salt is sol (which, of course, is sea salt).
