Split is the largest city on the Croatian Adriatic coast. In the third century it became the location of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace home. This palace still exists in the area known as the Riva of Split, a beautiful area with a long promenade along the harbor, small shops and outdoor cafes. This is where you catch the ferry to Croatian islands like Brac and Hvar, but take time to stop and enjoy the area before hopping on your ferry.
For 2-3 dollars you can enjoy a cappuccino with a view of the ferry ships and tour boats that is truly a delight.

We had supper at the Cafe Luna and enjoyed the soft breeze wafting in from the open windows and the view of the promenade. The Croatians do pasta dishes well, so we ordered lasagna. Mine was made with chicken and mushrooms in an Alfredo cream sauce and my husband's was bolognese with a nice meat sauce. Both were topped generously with nicely melted cheese and the portions were large. The waiters were capable but not friendly and the fresh lemonade was too strong for me to finish, but the meal was otherwise a pleasant experience. Our total bill with soft drinks and tip was under $30.
