Population and Popularity
Croatia has a population of approximately 4.5 million citizens. Though their present population is dying at a higher rate than new Croatians are being born, this decrease in population will likely reverse once foreigners learn of the Croatia’s natural beauty and pleasant climate. Improved living conditions in this former communist country (once part of Yugoslavia), also make it a more attractive place to live and visit.
During communism, this land of a 1000 islands was known mostly to Western Europeans looking for an inexpensive vacation with austere lodging and dining but magnificent scenery and climate. Of course, it was also a desired spot for citizens of other communist bloc countries who vacationed in even more austere camps and hostels in the country. Now Croatia is becoming known throughout Europe for its ideal location, climate, and interesting historic sites.
An added benefit of vacationing in Croatia is the variety of lodging choices. In popular tourist areas or off the beaten path, you can choose from a range of hotels—plain and simple to five star luxury; or you can choose from a range of vacation apartments—simple to luxurious, renting daily, weekly or monthly. With this wide range of choices, every budget can be satisfied.
For Language-Lazy English-speakers
Croatians speak Croatian, but English is fast becoming the second language in Europe making travel easier for Americans and British tourists, who traditionally are incredibly language illiterate. (I’m an American, so I can say this without prejudice.) Most menus and web sites have Croatian and English descriptions. Typically, people younger than 40 will know English and those over 40 know German or Italian. Although all former communist countries had mandatory Russian language classes, few of the citizens speak this language of their former oppressors.
