A Rental Car at Half the Price!

The first time we visited Croatia, we flew into Dubrovnik, stayed in Lapad, and used public transportation to get around. But several of our friends who regularly vacation in Croatia told us we were missing a lot by not traveling by car down the coast. So this trip we rented a car at the Split airport, and we admit that they were right! (picture: My husband checks out our rental car at the airport.)

The scenery of the trip along the coast and the ability to stop in little harbor towns along the way was really a pleasure and well worth the cost of the rental car.

We did something a bit daring on this trip and booked our car on the Internet with an unknown rental agency that offered prices half the cost of the other agencies. Overall we were satisfied although we did have a bit of a delay the day we arrived:

After picking up the car and driving to a grocery store near the airport, my husband noticed that one of the tires had a slow leak. He called the dealer who had already left the airport to deliver a car to another location (this lack of full time help at their rental locations is probably one way they can offer lower priced rentals). The dealer agreed to send a repairman either to the airport or the Split Riva within 2 hours, and we opted to wait at the Riva (see the post about this area). Everything happened as planned--a friendly repairman arrived within an hour to change our tire, and we never had any other problems. When we returned the car to the airport, my husband itemized our costs for this problem--parking fees and cell phone charges, and the man took them off our bill without any hesitation.
